Pruning
Every tree is different in terms of size, species and location. An arborist has the training and knowledge to determine the most appropriate method of pruning required, to improve or maintain the safety, health and appearance of your trees.
There are a variety of reasons why trees require regular pruning:
- Minimise interference with buildings or power lines
- Minimise safety issues around homes, roads, streets and paths
- Remove decaying, dead, diseased or distorted limbs
- Remove wind or storm damaged branches
- Increase canopy light penetration
- Decrease canopy wind resistance
- Maintain or improve tree shape or form
- Preemptive thinning to avoid storm damage
Our team of Gold Coast arborists can handle all of your tree requirements. We employ modern techniques and equipment, while ensuring maximum safety for your property, our staff and the general community.
Tree Removal
We all appreciate the natural beauty that trees add to their surroundings, softening the rigid lines of buildings, while providing welcome shade, and habitats for wildlife. Unfortunately, there are often circumstances that require the removal of a tree. An arborist can assist you in deciding whether a tree is worth saving, or should be removed. Common reasons where removal may be necessary include when the tree is:
- Damaged, diseased, dead or dying
- Considered an unacceptable risk of damage, injury or death
- Creating an obstruction that cannot be rectified by pruning
- Damaging other trees due to crowding
- Preventing building or landscape extensions
- Damaging pipes, paths and driveways due to invasive roots
Emergency Tree Care
Storms cause considerable damage to trees on the Gold Coast, particulary in summer, when afternoon or evening storms lash the coast whipping up strong winds and heavy rain. Limbs of trees are damaged or fall, along with entire trees, often landing on cars, buildings and other trees.
The weight of a fallen Eucalyptus tree is substantial, making it's removal a dangerous exercise for even the most experienced home handyman. An arborist has the know-how and equipment to manage fallen tree removal in a systematic and safe manner, without risk of further damage to surrounding landscapes or buildings.
Tree Planting
With over 10 years experience in Gold Coast arborist services, our tree experts can advise on the preparation and planting of trees. Certain species are suitable for various conditions, positions and applications with the aim of complimenting your property's landscape.
A high percentage of arborist work involves finding solutions to problems that could have been avoided in the first place, with proper tree selection at the time of planting.
Pests and Diseases
Disease and pest infestation can have serious adverse effects on a tree's health. If an abnormality in a tree appears, a thorough examination of the problem should be undertaken immediately. An arborist can identify specific symptoms of damage, diagnose the problem, and recommend a suitable course of treatment.
Mulching
Mulching is one of the most common and beneficial forms of garden management, that can result in wonderful results in terms of maximum tree health.
Organic mulching is the practise of placing plant and tree based materials over the surface of the soil, to maintain moisture, improve the fertility of the soil, and prevent weed growth. However, not all mulch is good mulch, and some practices have minimal, or even detrimental impacts on gardens and landscapes.
Some of the benefits of a quality mulch that has been correctly applied include:
- A reduction in the evaporation of soil moisture
- Controlling weed growth and germination
- Insulation of soil protecting roots from extreme temperatures
- Improvement of soil drainage, structure and biology
- Improvement in soil fertility
- Improvement in water penetration
- Improvement in airflow
- Prevention of plant disease
- Reduction is soil erosion
- Gives landscapes a more natural look
Growing in a natural forest environment, trees roots are embedded in an organically rich, well-aerated soil overflowing with microorganisms and essential nutrients. The soil itself is covered in a thick layer of living organisms, organic materials and leaf litter. This natural environment provides the conditions for positive mineral uptake, root growth and tree health, and can be replicated in your garden by the proper use of quality mulch.
Mulching helps gardens become more drought-resistant, naturally looking, temperature moderate, healthier, and experience less weed growth, which reduces the time required watering and weeding.
Mulching Tips
- Remove all grass and weeds before mulching
- Maintain the depth of mulch between 50-75mm
- Do not heap mulch against the trunks of trees
- Top up your mulch as it decomposes, at least once a year
- Improve drainage by choosing a quality mulch low in fines
- Leave fresh mulch for 12 months to start decomposing before use
- Do not use fresh mulch around flowering plants and vegetables
- Do not use mulch close to buildings as it may attract termites
Fresh mulch recently harvested from trees has a high percentage of moisture and low density. Fresh mulch will also draw nitrogen from the soil as it starts decomposing.
Fresh mulch can be used successfully around established trees and shrubs. We recommend the application of a nitrogen-based feriliser such as Blood & Bone prior to mulching, to reduce nitrogen draw from the soil.
Benefis of Aged Forest Mulch
Aged Forest Mulch may cost a little more, however the benefits far outweigh the additional expense. After 12 months, Aged Forest Mulch has settled, most of the moisture has evaporated, and it's compacted to a correct density. Aged mulch has also started decomposing, immediately adding nutrients to the soil when applied, with minimal nitrogen draw.
Aged mulch is better value for money, provides immediate benefits to the soil, and is better suited to young, growing and flowering plants along with vegetables.
