Reasons for Removing a Tree Stump
Termites - Having a substantial amount of timber sitting in the ground will attract termites. Once established in the area, termites can quickly move to other sources of food such as buildings, sheds or trees.
Hazard - Having a stump in the yard is dangerous, both for vehicles and people, especially as a trip hazard for young children playing in the grounds.
Obstacle - Tree stumps are an obstacle for general yard maintenance. Property owners must mow around stumps which is an inconvenience, plus weeds/grass will grow around the stump, removal of which adds to the workload.
Unsightly - Nothing looks worse than a lush, manicured lawn with a dirty old decaying tree stump sitting in the middle.
Natural Decay - A large hardwood tree stump can take 20 years to naturally decay. That's a long time to put up with the inconvenience, untidy appearance and safety concerns.
We have been catering for all types of commercial and residential tree care for over 10 years, providing a professional, reliable and affordable arborist service throughout the Gold Coast and hinterland areas.
What is Stump Removal?
Stump removal involves the extraction of an entire tree stump and root system from the ground, using heavy-duty machinery such as an excavator. With most stumps, there is far more timber under the ground, than above, due to the tree's widespread root system. Subsequently, Stump Removal leaves a massive hole, seriously disturbing the grounds far beyond the stump.
Stump Removal is generally used when a block of land is being cleared for building. In this case, the roots must be removed for footings, slab, services etc. Being a building site, any ground disturbance will be of little aesthetic concern.
Advantages of Stump Removal
- Complete removal of root collar and roots
- Required for construction sites
- Stops spread of disease and pests
- Area can be immediately replanted with another tree
- No long-term ground subsidence due to root decomposition
- No subsequent root regrowth
What is Stump Grinding?
Stump grinding is the process of using a special machine to remove the tree stump and underlying roots, without disturbing the surrounding roots. The Stump Grinding machine features high-speed rotating teeth that grinds the stump into small chips.
Once the grinding is complete, a hole is left in the yard that is slightly larger than the diameter of the trunk. All trunk chips and shavings are removed for mulching. The hole is then filled with soil, with the remaining roots decomposing naturally.
Benefits of Stump Grinding
- Minimal ground disturbance and remedial work
- Minimal ground recovery time
- Efficient and cost-effective
- No roots to dispose
The Cost of Stump Grinding
Stump Grinders range in size from self-propelled hand-held machines to ride-ons. The larger the stumps and number requiring grinding, the bigger the machine needed to do the job efficiently.
The cost of Stump Grinding generally depends on the time and effort required. This will vary according to:
- The number of stumps
- The diameter of the stumps
- The species of timber - softwood or hardwood
- Access to the stumps
- Angle of the ground surrounding the stumps
- Obstacles near the stumps - fence, buildings etc
- Any below ground pipes, services near the stumps
- Extent of the above ground root system
It's very difficult to quote on stump grinding as every job is different. For instance, a large Poinciana stump with an extensive above ground root system will cost far more to grind, than five Cocos Palm stumps in a similar location.
We can deliver a quote over the phone if you can contact us with images of the stumps.
